When it rains, it pours

Tigger had been my constant companion since 1997. He followed me everywhere, literally slept on top of me every night, never missed an opportunity to curl up on my lap and licked and nuzzled me when I was sad. Three years ago, we almost lost him to a severe case of kidney stones. He had surgery to allow him to pass the stones more easily and was doing great until a few months ago when he had another severe episode. I was so thrilled when he made another miraculous recovery. All was well until Wednesday morning. I took him to the animal hospital, they fixed him up and I brought him home. And I knew deep down inside that this was it.

Yesterday afternoon, my poor little Tigger’s body just gave out. His kidneys were shot, he was bleeding internally and his other organs were failing him. It was with great sadness and a heavy heart that I had to put him down. He was only 10 years old. Those of you who have pets know how hard it is to say goodbye to a special furry friend.

  5. Gigi, I am so sorry about the loss of your Tigger. I truly know how painful that must be. We have four special family members of the feline variety and I would be heartbroken if I lost any of them.
On another note, I am so happy to see you posting again. You inspired me to start my own blog too. (http://littlemis.wordpress.com)
    Glad you are back!!

  6. I’m so sorry about Tigger. It’s so hard when our furry friends leave us. They live on in our memory but nothing can replace the hole they leave behind.

  7. Poor Tigger! I’m sure he’s rolling in the big catnip field in the sky.

(I love the photo you’ve used of him: classic cat sitting on the very piece of paper you need.)

  8. Oh Gigi, I’m sorry about Tigger. It’s amazing how much we can grow to love animals. Hope the sadness will get better with time. Sending hugs. Kelly

  9. I’m so sorry about your kitty.

  10. Gigi,

Our deepest condolences on Tigger’s passing. Being owned by an orange cat, I know how very special they are.

I am sure Tigger will send someone new into your life when you’re ready. Kind souls like yours are not long without furry companions.

  11. Firstly, Gigi, I’m delighted to see a post from you…I’ve missed you! Secondly, the dress is fabulous! Thirdly…I’m so sorry to hear about Tigger; I well remember when you had to make the decision about his surgery. I know you will miss him…and I also suspect that this means another abandoned kitty is now going to get a marvelous home. Not a replacement…just another place for the kitty love to go. {h}

  18. Oh no, Gigi. I’ve wanted to see you posting again but not this way. I’m so, so sorry you’ve lost Tigger.

  19. Karla

I’m very sorry that his days were cut short. It is a certainty that, as one of your cats, Tigger experienced more love and happiness in 10 years than most do in twice that time. Here’s hoping that the good memories will stay with you.

  20. Awww, I’m sorry to hear about your Tigger. He had a great life with you and your family, and I hope you’ll soon be able to remember all those good times with fondness.

  21. I can relate. I am very sad to hear that… I remember you writing about him. I bet he’s in Kitty Heaven with my Blueberry.

    BIG HUGS

  29. Gigi,
so sorry to read about Tigger. I’m sure he had the best life possible with you, even if he had to go too early.
I guess he is happy and healthy where he is now, just over the rainbow bridge with my Cleo….

  30. Gigi,
I’m so sorry about Tigger – such a warm fuzzy friend to carry around in your heart. He’ll always be a part of you – you who has inspired so many. Penny and Patty, my fuzzy puppy friends, wag their tails for you and for Tigger. Be well.–>

    Hi Gigi,
I was surfing around and found your blog just today. I was reading through your archives and found this sad story about Tigger. I am sorry for your loss (even so long ago!) and wanted to share a secret with you for when you get your next cat. I think that the commercial foods available for pets is not too good for them and can cause illnesses and allergies. Figs used to be overweight and he had licked the fur off his leg from an allergy when I found this remedy for him.

Figs is my cat – and I got him from the pound as a teenager when my son Darren was 7, and so I believe this feline pal of mine is 13 years old. He’s a neutered male and I keep him healthy by making cat food for him.

About every 3 weeks I purchase 4-5 packages of chicken hearts and gizzards, one package of turkey (drumsticks, backs or wings) and a small butternut squash. I rinse and put all this offal and the squash, sliced and stemmed, but including the seeds, into a large, 8 qt. pasta pot, add 2 tablespoons Kosher salt and enough cold water to almost reach the level of the gizzards. Bring that pot to a boil and then turn down the flame and simmer it all for at least 1 hour.

Let the soup cool and then put through the blender in batches (bones removed but retain all the squash) and pour everything into a huge salad bowl. Stir all the blender batches together evenly and pour up to 3 cups each into Rubbermaid containers (the ones that look like they’re made for sandwiches) and freeze them.

Usually this makes enough cat food for about 3 weeks. To serve Figs, one by one we thaw a container and slice the cat food into 6 equal portions; we feed Figs at 6:30 AM and 6:30 PM only one portion at a time.

Figs never gets sick or licks off his fur anymore, his fur is thick and glossy, his eyes are bright, and if our hallway were longer, then he could be an Olympic contender.

I don’t give this recipe to everybody since there aren’t too many extra hearts and gizzards. You have such a great blog – I want to give back a little to you.

    My best,
    Lynn Purvis

  32. Lynn, I’m so sorry that I’m just now seeing your comment. Thanks so much for the cat food recipe. My Tigger was on a special prescription diet but, obviously, it just wasn’t enough. My little Winnie has problems with chronic constipation – I think I’ll try this recipe and add some fiber to it for her. She is becoming increasingly picky about her food and this sounds like something she’d love.

  33. im so sorry for your loss gigi, i can understand how it feels, and i just received a message from my family that my 8 year old kitty just died early this morning. i love him so much and i know you love your tigger too. may god bless our kitties. love ‘em so much.

am reading back issues and came across this. i am also between cats, so I understand. But I have been lucky enough to have 2 of our cats come back to visit after their passing, so cat love lasts forever. I’m sure they are all playing together in cat heaven.
